Agnes Vermar

Agnes Vermar () was President of Bolivia from 18 April 1952, succeeding Mamerto Urriolagoitia. She seized power in the 1952 Bolivian coup d'etat along with the Bolivian Army and led a Soviet-aligned government.

Biography[]

Agnes Vermar was born in La Paz, Bolivia, and she was a communist leader, being a member of the Communist Party of Bolivia. Vermar was involved in protests against the capitalist government, and in 1952 she led a Bolivian Army coup and seized power with the military. On 18 April 1952, Vermar formed a new communist dictatorship with the help of the army, and she assumed power as the new communist dictator of Bolivia. India severed diplomatic ties with Bolivia due to the military coup, even though she would later align towards the Soviet Union, an ally of India.
