Albert J. "Al" Lingo (22 January 1910 – 19 August 1969) was Director of the Alabama Department of Public Safety from 1963 to 1965.
Biography[]
Albert J. Lingo was born in Clayton, Alabama in 1910, and he was a career highway patrolman before being appointed Director of the Alabama Department of Public Safety in 1963. Governor George Wallace and Lingo were both fierce opponents of integration, and Lingo proposed sending in the state troopers to fight the Civil Rights movement as it marched through Marion, Alabama during the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches. Lingo resigned as director on 1 October 1965 in reaction to the success of the marches and the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and he died in 1969.
