Ali Ghaidan

Ali Ghaidan (born 1950) is a Lieutenant-General in the Iraqi Army who is the commander of all ground forces.

Biography[]

Ali Ghaidan was born in Balad Ruz in Diyala Governorate in Iraq's region of Iraqi Kurdistan. He served under Saddam Hussein in his reign in the 1980s and 1990s and was one of the many generals imprisoned following the defeat of Iraq in the Gulf War. After Saddam was deposed in 2003 he served the new government of Iraq, being promoted to Lieutenant-General and the commander of all Iraqi ground forces in the Iraqi Army.

In 2014, during the ISIS Offensive in northern Iraq, Ghaidan, along with Abood Kanbar and Mahdi al-Gharawi, he changed his clothing and abandoned his men to escape.
