Various definitions of the Southwest
The American Southwest is a region of the United States, located in the dry, hot, and arid southwestern region of the country. Arizona and New Mexico are considered to be the core of the Southwest, while southern California, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado are sometimes also included in definitions; Texas and Oklahoma are rarely considered to be Southwestern states. Phoenix, El Paso, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, and Tucson are the most populous cities of the Southwest. The region was well-known as a major region of the "Wild West" era of the 19th and early 20th centuries of American history, with gunslingers such as Billy the Kid, Colton White, and John Marston being active in the region. The region was also home to the Apache tribe and its famous chief, Geronimo, who waged a war of resistance against the US Army during the 1880s.
