The Andaman Islands are an archipelago in the Bay of Bengal, located between India to the west and Myanmar to the north and east. The islands are home to the indigenous Andamanese people, who lived in isolation for thousands of years; since European contact in the late 18th century, disease decimated the population, which dropped from 7,000 at the time of contact to a mere 400-450 during the 2010s. In 2011, the 572 islands had a population of 343,125 people.
