Andrew Josephus Lee (1837-15 September 1862) was an Orderly Sergeant of the US Army during the American Civil War. He was killed in action at the 1862 Battle of Crampton's Gap.
Biography[]
Lee was born in Parishville, St. Lawrence County, New York, and enlisted in the 16th New York Infantry Regiment in 1861 with the start of the American Civil War. He rose to the rank of Orderly Sergeant in the war, and was one of the leaders of his regiment during the Maryland/Antietam Campaign of fall 1862.
During the Battle of Crampton's Gap during the larger Battle of South Mountain, Lee served under the command of William B. Franklin against the Confederate army of General Howell Cobb. Lee led a bayonet charge against the Confederates on the ridge, but was shot in the chest, with the bullet lodging in his bowels. He was taken care of in a field hospital, and his last requests were to have his personal belongings sold to care for his brothers and sisters’ education. Lee died of his wounds at Burketsville, Maryland the day after the battle. Lee was buried in the Sharpsburg Cemetery near the site of the later Battle of Antietam with the fallen soldiers of New York regiments.
