Arizona is a US state located in the American Southwest with its capital at Phoenix. The state was admitted to the union on 14 February 1912, having been taken over by the United States following the Mexican-American War of 1848; it was expanded with the Gadsden Purchase of 1853. The US Army crushed the Navajo and the other Native American tribes that attempted to resist the white settlement of the Southwest, and the region grew in population as white settlers and immigrants moved in. In 2015, the state had a population of 6,828,065 people.
