August Sabbe

August Sabbe (1 September 1909-27 September 1978) was one of the last members of the Forest Brothers of Estonia. He killed himself in 1978 before the KGB could hunt him down for his actions in World War II.

Biography[]

August Sabbe was born on 1 September 1909 in Vorumaal, Paidra, Estonia. He joined the Forest Brothers during World War II and resisted the communist Soviet Union when they occupied the Baltics, and he was one of the last living veterans of the guerrilla wars against the USSR by 1978. That year, KGB agents posing as fishermen found Sabbe while he was fishing, so Sabbe leapt into the Vohandu River and used his fishing hook to hook himself to a log, drowning himself so that the Soviets could not capture him.
