The Battle of Cozumel (September 1719) was a battle fought between a Spanish Navy flotilla of six ships and the pirate brig Jackdaw between the island of Cozumel and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. The Dutch merchant Milo van der Graaff hired the pirate Edward Kenway to ambush the brig Hercules off Yucatan, as her captain was responsible for killing several of his employees. Kenway ambushed the Hercules and her escorts in the passage, sinking all of the ships; the pirates boarded and plundered Hercules before scuttling her. Kenway was rewarded for carrying out the mission for Van der Graaff.
