The Romans, led by Consul Marcus Valerius Corvus, deployed on a mountain. The Samnites charged and the Romans and Samnites engaged in tireless melee, and a Roman cavalry attack failed to break their lines. After hours, the Samnites finally retreated, despite inflicting heavy losses.
