The Battle of Mt. Niutou was one of the northern expeditions of Jiang Wei against Wei, which was launched in 249 AD, and met heavy opposition, eventually being defeated.

Background

Having gained the help of Xiahou Ba, Jiang Wei invaded Wei territory, where he was met by Guo Huai, Governor of Yong Province. Jiang Wei built a fortress (Qu Castle) on the front lines, and while the enemy was laying siege to it, he moved to take Yangzhou Castle by way of Mt. Niutou ("Bull's Head").

Battle

However, his move was anticipated by Wei's Chen Tai, and he was surprised by an attack while still on Niutou. Jiang Wei was forced to retreat to Yangping Gate, but on the way he was attacked by Sima Shi, who had brought reinforcements from Luoyang. Fortunately, Jiang Wei was able to repel them by using arbalests designed by Zhuge Liang.
