Bernard of Italy
Bernard of Italy (797-17 April 818) was the King of Italy from 810 to 818, succeeding Pepin of Italy and preceding Lothaire of Italy.

Biography

Bernard was the illegitimate son of King Pepin of Italy and the grandson of Emperor Charlemagne; although he was illegitimate, Charlemagne allowed him to inherit his father's Kingdom of Italy in 810 on his death. He was content until his half-brother Louis the Pious decided to grant most of the Frankish Empire to his own son, the future Lothaire of Italy, making Bernard a vassal of Lothaire and not granting him any more lands. Bernard rebelled, but Louis the Pious captured him and blinded him, killing him in the process.
