Bertha of Savoy

Bertha of Savoy (21 September 1051-27 December 1087) was Empress of the Holy Roman Empire from 1084 to 1087 with Henry IV of Germany.

Biography[]

Bertha was born on 21 September 1051, the daughter of Otto of Savoy and Adelaide of Susa. In 1055, she was betrothed to the five-year-old future Henry IV of Germany at the age of four, and she married him on 13 July 1066. She was beautiful and noble, but her husband had two or three concubines at the same time. In 1069, her husband attempted to repudiate her, saying that he could not carry out conjugal relations with her any longer. However, Henry was eventually forced to reconcile with her, and she bore him Agnes of Germany, Conrad II of Italy, and Henry V of Germany.
