The Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB), known as the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) until 2017, is a centrist political party in Brazil, founded on 30 June 1981 by opponents of the military government's National Renewal Alliance party. The party had its roots in the big tent original Brazilian Democratic Movement, which had been founded on 4 December 1965, and it advocated a variety of views, most of them liberal. The MDB focused on congressional and gubernatorial elections instead of presidential elections, and the party was in a coalition government with the Workers' Party of Brazil until 2016, when PMDB leader Michel Temer formed a conservative coalition government with the Brazilian Social Democracy Party and other factions.
