Flag of Catalonia

Catalonia is a region in the northeastern extremity of the Iberian Peninsula, with Barcelona serving as its capital. Catalonia is a cultural region, home to the Catalan people and language, and Catalonia was ruled by the Spanish kingdoms from 1137. After the creation of the Second Spanish Republic in 1931, the Generalitat of Catalonia was granted autonomy, ruling over Catalonia until the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939, when the fascist Falange party of Francisco Franco stripped Spain's autonomous regions of their autonomy; in 1977, autonomy was restored to Catalonia. Catalonia became one of the most economically dynamic communities of Spain, and the regional government briefly declared independence from 27 to 30 October 2017 after an independence referendum. However, the Spanish government annulled the results, dissolved the Catalan government, and temporarily suspended Catalan autonomy.
