The Chikuma was an Imperial Japanese Navy heavy cruiser that was commissioned on 20 May 1939. The Chikuma was from the same cruiser squadron as her sister ship, the Tone, and both ships were sunk at the Battle of Santa Cruz in 1942 before being raised and repaired. The ship's stern was disabled by a US Navy aircraft bomb at the Battle off Samar in the Philippines, and several torpedoes hit the ship. The Chikuma sank from the effect of the air attack, and the destroyer Nowaki later arrived to pick up survivors.
