Biography[]

Tawfiq was born on 30 May 1074 to a family of Nestorian Christian Levantines, and he became a commander of the Abbasid Caliphate. Tawfiq commanded Abbasid troops in Jaffa during the jihad for Jerusalem after 1099, but his fellow Christian ruler Godfrey de Bouillon sent him a monetary gift and made him have a positive opinion of him. Godfrey invited Tawfiq to his court, and on 29 January 1101 he agreed. In November 1102 he converted to Catholicism, and on 21 November 1102 he was granted the County of Negev by King Godfrey after converting.
