Cynan Dindaethwy

Cynan Dindaethwy (740-816) was King of Gwynedd from 798 to 805, succeeding Caradog ap Meirion and preceding Hywel ap Rhodri Molwynog.

Biography[]

Cynan Dindaethwy was the son of Rhodri Molwynog, and he ascended to the throne of Gwynedd upon the death of Caradog ap Meirion in 798. He maintained his court at Llanfaes instead of the traditional capital of Aberffraw, and he engaged in a destructive dynastic struggle with his brother Hywel ap Rhodri Molwynog during his reign. Cynan was defeated and banished in 805, and he died in 816.
