Cat Island is an island in the central Bahamas. Once home to cotton plantations owned by Peter Beckford, the island was named for its once-large feral cat population. In 1783, the island was colonized by American loyalists who had fled the United States after the American Revolutionary War, and the island became home to slash-and-burn agricultural practices in the following centuries. In 2010, Cat Island had a population of 1,522 people.
