Eleuthera is an island in the central Bahamas. Once known as Cigateo, the island was settled by English Puritans from Bermuda in 1648, and its name, eleuthera, means "free" in Greek. The island was once home to a Royal Navy fort, but the fort was conquered by the pirates of Edward Kenway's ship Jackdaw in 1719, and it served as a pirate haven during the Golden Age of Piracy. In 2017, Eleuthera had a population of 11,000 people, with 85% being black, 12% European, and 3% other.
