The Lucayans were the original Taino inhabitants of the Bahamas before the arrival of Spanish settlers. In 1492, Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus arrived on the island and began colonizing the Bahamas, and the Spanish began enslaving the natives a few years after arrival. By 1520, all of the Lucayans had been enslaved in Cuba, removing them from the Bahamas.
