North Carolina is one of the fifty states of the United States, located in the American South. North Carolina was colonized by England in 1629 as the "Carolinas" together with South Carolina, and it was very productive as a producer of cotton, sugar, tobacco, and other plantation goods that were manufactured by black slaves. In the 1900s, the state moved on from the Old South to become a state with biotechnology, finance, engineering, and energy sectors, and the state has developed since the end of Reconstruction in the 19th century. In 2015, the state had a population of 10,042,802 people, with 68.5% being whites, 21.5% African-Americans, 2.2% Asians, 1.3% Native Americans, .1% Pacific Islander, 4.3% other, and 2.2% multiracial. Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina.
