French people

A crowd in Paris

The French people are an ethnic group native to France in Western Europe. Descended from the Celts of Gaul, the Romans of Italy, and the Franks of Germany, the French people were culturally influenced by the Romans (they speak French, a Romance language, and derive many of their laws from Rome), while the Franks shaped the future of the French people of today. There are 113,000,000 people of French descent worldwide, with the largest groups being in France (67,087,000 people), the United States (8,228,623 people), Argentina (6,800,000 people), Canada (5,077,215 people), and Brazil (as many as 1,000,000 people). Most of the French people in France are Catholic, while over a third of French-Americans are descended from the Protestant Huguenots
