Gustavo de Greiff (20th of June 1929-) was Attorney-General of Colombia from 1st of August 1992 to 17th of August 1994, preceding Alfonso Valdivieso Sarmiento.
Biography[]
Gustavo de Grieff Restrepo was born on 20th of June 1929 in Bogota, Colombia to a father of Swedish descent (his ancestor Karl von Greiff came to Colombia in 1825 as a geographer) and a mother of Spanish heritage. De Greiff was both a student and a professor at Del Rosario University during his lifetime, teaching law. In 1992, following the ratification of a new constitution by President Cesar Gaviria, De Greiff was elected to the new office of Attorney-General by the Supreme Court, and he angered foreign powers due to his opposition to foreign involvement in the war on drugs.
De Greiff supported the decriminalization of drugs, and he was open to making a deal with Pablo Escobar through fellow politician Fernando Duque. He also angered fellow ministers due to his autonomous style of public service, and he angered the Catholic church by accusing some priests of having links to FARC. De Greiff was forced into retirement in 1994 and served as ambassador to Mexico from 1995 to 1998 in virtual exile.
