Hattie Wyatt Caraway

Hattie Wyatt Caraway (1 February 1878 – 21 December 1950) was a US Senator from Arkansas (D) from 13 November 1931 to 3 January 1945, succeeding Thaddeus H. Caraway and preceding J. William Fulbright.

Biography[]

Hattie Wyatt Caraway was born in Bakerville, Tennessee in 1878, and she became the wife of US Senator Thaddeus H. Caraway. Her husband served in the Senate until his death in 1931, and Hattie took his place afterwards. Hattie decided to run for re-election after the remainder of her late husband's term expired, winning re-election for a full term with the active support of Louisiana Senator Huey Long. In 1944, she was defeated in the Democratic primary by J. William Fulbright. She died in Falls Church, Virginia in 1950 at the age of 72.
