Hugh Carey (11 April 1919-7 August 2011) was Governor of New York (D) from 1 January 1975 to 31 December 1982, succeeding Malcolm Wilson and preceding Mario Cuomo.
Biography[]
Hugh Carey was born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York on 11 April 1919, and he served as a colonel in the US Army during World War II. He was admitted to the bar in 1951 after graduating from St. John's University, and he served in the US House of Representatives from New York's 12th district from 3 January 1961 to 3 January 1963 (succeeding Francis E. Dorn and Edna F. Kelly), and from New York's 15th district from 3 January 1963 to 31 December 1974 (succeeding John H. Ray and preceding Leo C. Zeferetti). He successfully handled New York's mid-1970s economic crisis, made handling New York's environmental issues a priority, ended the warehousing of the mentally ill and developmentally disabled, and supported abortion rights (later becoming pro-life). He left office in 1982, and he died in 2011.
