Khan Jochi the Horseman

Jochi Khan (1041-) also known as Khan Jochi the Horseman, was a Mongol chieftain and the founder of the Mongol Empire from his capital of Bulgar. He expanded the Mongol civilization throughout Eastern Europe during his reign, but lost it after his death.


Jochi Khan was born in Bulgar, a city in present-day Kazakhstan. He became an elder in the Mongol tribe and began expanding the empire in the 1100s from the start of his reign in 1080, with his armies under Subutai the Elder (1053) and Khanzada Batu (1062) expanding through Russia against the Rus and taking over Ryazan in 1096.
