Joel Peter Pitkin was born in Brooklyn, New York City, and he became the owner of Pitkin Garments. Pitkin paid protection to the Tattaglia crime family and made suits for them, and he also allowed for an illegal boxing ring to be based out of the back room of his store. In December 1945, Corleone crime family enforcer Aldo Trapani forced Pitkin to pay protection to the Corleones instead.
