The Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic was a Soviet socialist republic in northern Central Asia that existed from 1936 to 1991, with Alma-Ata (Almaty) serving as its capital. The republic was created on 5 December 1936, with the Kazakh ASSR being elevated to a union republic. The country was ruled by the Communist Party of Kazakhstan during its existence, and Kazakhstan would declare its sovereignty on 25 October 1990. On 16 December 1991, Kazakhstan was the last Soviet republic to leave the USSR, becoming the Republic of Kazakhstan.
