Kevin White

Kevin White (25 September 1929-27 January 2012) was the Democratic Mayor of Boston from 1 January 1968 to 2 January 1984, succeeding John F. Collins and preceding Raymond Flynn.

Biography[]

Kevin White was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1929, the son of politician Joseph C. White. He practiced law before serving as Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1961 to 1967 and as Mayor of Boston from 1968 to 1984. White served as mayor during a period of racial turbulence, and he opposed the desegregation of Boston's public schools through court-ordered busing, revitalized the city's waterfront and downtown areas, and transformed Quincy Market into a tourist destination. His administration was notoriously corrupt, and investigations into his machine's corrupt practices motivated him to stand down in 1983. He died in 2012.
