Komeito is a conservative political party in Japan that was founded in January 1962 by supporters of the Buddhist Soka Gakkai movement. The party originated as a populist and agrarian movement, and it merged with the New Peace Party to form the New Komeito Party on 7 November 1998. The party revised its views to be secular in 1970, but it was still considered to be Soka Gakkai's political arm in the following decades. In 2012, the party formed a governing alliance with the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan.
