Liu Qi was a son of Liu Biao. He was passed over as heir by his younger brother Liu Cong, and his stepmother attempted to have him murdered to secure the succession of his infant sibling. He escaped with help from Zhuge Liang, and in gratitude to Liu Bei, led a naval fleet to rescue Liu Bei during the Battle of Chang Ban in 208. Liu Bei and his army escaped on Liu Qi's ships. Liu Qi died not long after the battle.
