The New Progressive Party of Puerto Rico (PNP) is a conservative political party in Puerto Rico that was founded on 20 August 1967. The party believed in Puerto Rican statehood, a cause that was supported by the US Republican Party, while the US Democratic Party supported allowing the Puerto Rican people to decide the future of their island through self-determination. The party's members affiliated with either of the two main parties in the United States government, choosing to unite people of all ideologies behind the idea that Puerto Rico should become a state of the USA with two senators and six representatives. In 2017, the party held 21/30 Senate seats, 34/51 House of Representatives seats, and 33/78 municipality seats.
