Flag of Northern Rhodesia

Northern Rhodesia was a protectorate of the United Kingdom that existed from 1924 to 1964, with Livingstone (Lusaka) serving as its capital. Northern Rhodesia was annexed from the British South Africa Company by the British government in 1924, and the very small white minority of Northern Rhodesia controlled the vast mineral wealth oof the Central African nation. The British established the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1953 in order to appease the inhabitants of Southern Rhodesia, who were frustrated with the discriminatory laws passed by the minority-rule government. However, the formation of the federation hastened calls for majority rule, and Northern Rhodesia declared independence as Zambia in 1964.
