Pepin the Hunchback

Pepin the Hunchback (767-811) was the eldest son of Charlemagne and Himiltrude.

Biography[]

Pepin was born in 767 to Charlemagne and Himiltrude, and he came from the House of Du Perche, a dynasty of Catholic French. He developed kyphosis after birth, giving him a "hunchback", and he was not considered fit to be the heir of Charlemagne. His half-brother Carloman was later christened "Pepin of Italy" in 781 and became the King of Italy, which proved that Charlemagne was going to disinherit the elder Pepin. In 792 Pepin rebelled against his father, but the plot was put down and Pepin was tonsured and sent to Prum Abbey in Trier, Germany, where he died in 811.
