Pope Alexander V Ottobuono

Pope Alexander V (1254-), born Ottobuono di Razzi, was Pope from 19 August 1316, succeeding Pope Sergius V.

Biography[]

Ottobuono di Razzi was born in Aquileia, Italy in 1254, and he served as Patriarch of Aquileia during the early 14th century. On 7 June 1315, Emperor Friedrich the Usurper appointed Ottobuono as his new Court Chaplain after Ottobuono pointed out that he was better than Bishop Johann of Lavant, and Ottobuono served as a cardinal and court chaplain until 1316, when he was elected Pope following the murder of Pope Sergius V. Ottobuono was consecrated as "Pope Alexander V".
