The Popular Democratic Party (PPD) is a liberal political party in Puerto Rico, founded on 22 July 1938 by Luis Munoz Marin and dissidents from the Liberal Party of Puerto Rico. In the 1950s, the party drafted the constitution of Puerto Rico and created most of the ruling institutions of the island; Munoz was the first directly-elected Governor of Puerto Rico. The PPD rivaled the New Progressive Party of Puerto Rico for power, and most of its members were affiliated with the Democratic Party in the United States.
