Portuguese legislative election, 1844

The Portuguese legislative election occurred in 1844, seeing a coalition of conservative and reactionary parties, namely the Cabralismo and Monarquicos parties. Riding on the successes in the Omani-Portuguese War and the Kingdom of Portugal's latest colonial acquisitions in East Africa, the monarchists and their conservative allies were able to secure victory. In this election, the Monarqicos displaced the more moderate Cabralismo as the parliamentary majority—which had dominated Portuguese politics since the 1820s. The Prime Minister António Bernardo da Coasta Cabral, leader of the conservatives, stepped down from his office as the Monarqicos formed the new government.
