The Salerno Turn was a 1944 political compromise made between the Italian Communist Party, King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, Prime Minister Pietro Badoglio, and the anti-fascist parties of Italy during World War II. The Communist Party agreed to set up a government of national unity and abandon the socialist armed struggle, moving the party to the right as it was forced to disband all communist members of the Italian Resistance. The "Salerno Turn" helped in creating a united Italian government as World War II came to a close.
