Samuel Gilbert was a judge of the British Admiralty Court in Jamaica. In October 1720, Gilbert tried the captured female pirates Mary Read and Anne Bonny in St. Jago de la Vega, and he sought to have the two of them executed, although he was forced to temporarily grant them a stay of execution due to their pregnancies.
