The Scottish National Party (SNP) is a social democratic and nationalist political party in Scotland. The SNP, while only contesting elections in Scotland, became the third-largest party in the United Kingdom by 2017, and it dominated the Scottish Parliament (63/129 seats) and the Scottish seats in the House of Commons (54/59 seats). The party supported independence for Scotland, social democracy, and Scottish membership in the European Union, and it decided to push for a second independence referendum in the aftermath of Brexit after the previous referendum, held in 2014, was narrowly defeated. The SNP experienced a resurgence at the 2019 general election as Brexit led to a rise in support for a second referendum, but, in 2021, Alex Salmond led a splintergroup of the SNP in forming the Alba Party, having developed a feud with SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon.
