Stefano de Stefano worked as an energy attorney in Houston, Texas, and he was a registered Republican Party member. In 2012, he supported Ted Cruz's run for the US Senate, but he came to believe that Cruz was more of a show horse and extreme politician than a "Texas work horse" and a reasonable politician. In 2018, De Stefano decided to run in the Republican primary during the US Senate elections, representing the centrist "free market Republicans".
