Tulum

Tulum was a Mayan walled city located in the Yucatan peninsula of eastern Mexico, now a part of Quintana Roo state. The city was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya, reaching its height between the 13th and 15th centuries. The city was abandoned as a result of population decline caused by the Spanish conquerors' introduction of diseases to the area during the 16th century, but the Hashshashin order would use Tulum as a base until their move to Great Inagua in 1722. Today, it is a popular site for tourists due to its successful preservation.
