1816 election
The United States presidential election, 1816 was held from 1 November to 4 December 1816. The Democratic-Republican Party candidate James Monroe and his running mate Daniel D. Tompkins easily won re-election against the collapsing Federalist Party's candidates Rufus King and John E. Howard, defeating them 183 electoral votes to 34. The Democratic-Republicans' advocacy for a national bank and protectionist tariffs won them the election, as the Federalists had nothing to campaign on, except for opposing a war that had been won by the Democratic-Republicans.
