The United States presidential election, 1940 was held on 5 November 1940. The incumbent President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, ran for an unprecedented third term in office with Henry A. Wallace as his running mate, and the Republican Party chose the businessman Wendell Willkie as its nominee; Willkie chose Charles L. McNary as his running mate. Willkie campaigned on isolationism, and he crusaded against Roosevelt's eagerness to enter World War II and against some of the perceived failures of the New Deal during the Great Depression. Roosevelt promised that there would be no involvement in foreign wars if he was elected, and he built strong support from labor unions, political machines, ethnic minorities, and the Solid South, leading to him winning the election with 449 electoral votes to Willkie's 82.
