Wales is a country that is a part of the United Kingdom, with Cardiff being its capital. Wales is located along the Irish Sea between the island of Great Britain and Ireland, having a distinctively Celtic culture inherited from Bretons that fled the Roman Empire's collapse in the 5th century CE (both Welsh and English are spoken, and the country is bilungual). In 1282, King Edward I of England conquered Wales, and Owain Glyndwyr briefly regained Welsh independence in the early 1410s before the Kingdom of England crushed the rebellion. In 1542, Wales was formally annexed to England, and Wales became an industrial nation while being ruled by the United Kingdom in the 1800s. Today, it is a country within a country, having its own distinctive culture and its own sports teams.
