Walter Franklin George (29 January 1878-4 August 1957) was a US Senator from Georgia (D) from 22 November 1922 to 3 January 1957, succeeding Rebecca Latimer Felton and preceding Herman Talmadge.
Biography[]
Walter Franklin George was born in Preston, Georgia in 1878, and he practiced law after graduating from Mercer University. He served on the Supreme Court of Georgia from 1917 to 1922, and he resigned from the bench to run for the US Senate; he would serve in the Senate from 1922 to 1957. George was a member of the conservative wing of his party, and he opposed much of Franklin D. Roosevelt's domestic policy during the New Deal era, although he supported his handling of World War II. After the war, he was a leading opponent of desegregation, and he retired from the Senate in 1957. He died that same year.
